"Estimate: $120,000-$160,000 US
Chassis No. 003
Offered Without Reserve
390bhp @ 9600 rpm, Ferrari 308 based four-cam alloy fuel-injected V8 engine, Hewland DGB 5 Indy-Car style transaxle, space frame steel tubular chassis with inboard rocker arm suspension and shock absorbers, four-wheel disc brakes. Estimated curb weight: 2,000lbs. Wheelbase: 92.1"
Even though it was not built with racing in mind, the 308 GTB was soon seen in European competition. Ferrari’s “unofficial” race shop, Michelotto of Padova, built 11 Group 4 racing 308’s which garnered many trophies for their gentlemen driver owners in the 1980s. An even wilder version of the 308 was to be fabricated in California for the International Motor Sports Association’s “GTU” Class by the Huffaker Engineering Company.
Joe Huffaker began his race car design and fabrication career in the late 1950s when he built a series of winning SCCA production racers for Kjell Qvale, the British Motor Corporation’s (BMC) west coast importer and distributor. Not limited to SCCA production sports cars, Huffaker also built Trans-Am’s sports racers called “Genies”, as well as Indy cars. Huffaker drivers over the years reads like a “who’s who” of American motorsport and includes such fabled names as Walt Hansgen, Pedro Rodiguez, Dan Gurney, Augie Pabst and Bobby Unser.
In 1990 Huffaker built three I.M.S.A. GTU cars – the example pictured here being one of them – chassis number 003, the only one originally offered for sale by the project’s backer Bill Freeman. I.M.S.A.’s liberal rules resulted in a racer that owed little to the original Ferrari 308 GTB, save for its engine and exterior appearance. The Huffaker chassis is a “4120” tubular space frame featuring F1 style in-board rocker arm suspension arms, springs and shocks. The highly modified fuel-injected four-cam V8 Ferrari engine is mounted longitudinally in the chassis and is connected to an Indy-car type Hewland DGB-5 transaxle. Four air jacks provide speedy pit stops. The GTO style composite body is entirely removable via Dzus fasteners. Most ancillary components are USA sourced for ease of service and replacement.
When Bill Freeman commissioned these special cars, chassis no. 001 was to be his own “Fine Car Store” Works entry, with 002 and 003 destined to be customer cars. With all three cars completed by fall of 1990, the team laid plans for the 1991 I.M.S.A. season when disaster struck in the form of a rule change, which antiquated the cars with one stroke of a pen! A sad conclusion to this chapter of the Huffaker 308 GTB story, especially since Freeman had reportedly invested about a million dollars! Today one car is in a private collection and the other has enjoyed considerable racing success as a SCCA GT2 racer.
Chassis no. 003 car was advertised for sale by Freeman at $365,000 in 1992 with the following description: “The ultimate state-of-the-art racing machine based on a Ferrari 308 GTB with design and construction by Huffaker Engineering. Unbeatable for Ferrari Club events – this is the car Ferrari should have built for the enthusiast Club Member”.
Since 003 was never raced in its day, having only been tested, it is still in “like-new” condition. Although RM Auctions always urges a purchaser’s own preparation prior to track use, a recent full service, including an engine compression check, tune-up and a change of fluids by respected Ferrari technician Gregory Jones of Stuart, Florida found this Huffaker Ferrari to be in “absolutely excellent condition”.
This is an unbeatable opportunity for an enthusiast to acquire a professionally constructed Ferrari racing machine for about 25 cents on the dollar!
"
